New Etsy Shop, No Views? What Is Normal and What to Fix First
A new Etsy shop with no views is usually not broken. What Etsy says about new listings in search, the search visibility checks to pass first, and seven steps for your first month.
The short answer: a new Etsy shop with no views is usually not broken. Etsy says listing changes can take up to a day to show in search, but a new shop has no sales, reviews or click history, so it starts slowly. Fix Etsy's search visibility requirements first, then make your titles and tags specific.
The first few weeks of a shop feel the same for almost everyone: you list, you refresh your stats, and very little happens. Some of that is simply being new. Some of it is fixable today. This guide separates the two, using what Etsy itself says about search, so you spend your time on the parts you control.
What Is Normal for a New Shop?
Etsy does not publish a “normal” number of views for a new shop, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Views depend on what you sell, how many listings you have and how many other shops sell the same thing. What Etsy does say is that search looks at your listings, your shop and your customer service, and that for ads it scores how likely shoppers are to click a listing using its listing and shop history. A new shop has almost none of that history yet, so it has to earn it.
That is why the aim for the first month is not “lots of views”. It is: every listing searchable, every listing matching a real search, and a shop that looks trustworthy to a buyer who has never heard of you.
Step 1: Check That Etsy Is Not Holding Your Listings Back
Open Shop Manager and find the Etsy search visibility page. Etsy uses it to flag listings and shops that miss its requirements for priority placement in search. For listings, Etsy lists:
- At least one photo, and a high-resolution main photo (Etsy recommends 2,000 pixels or more wide and high).
- A main photo of the finished item on its own, clear and well lit, not a collage.
- The most specific category available, not a broad parent category.
- A return policy, even if it is “no returns”.
- For US listings, a domestic shipping price under $6.
For the shop, Etsy wants a logo (shop icon). New sellers miss this one more than any other. Fixes usually clear from the page within 24 hours.
Step 2: Make Sure Your Stats Are Telling You the Truth
In Stats, look at How shoppers found you. Two things catch new sellers out:
- App searches are counted separately. The Etsy search line counts searches on Etsy.com only. Searches made in the Etsy app are counted under Etsy app & other Etsy pages.
- Visits drop at the end of the day. Etsy filters out bot traffic a few times a day and again at the end of the day, so an early-afternoon number can shrink by night.
And don't test by searching for your own listing. Etsy says results are personal to each shopper, so not finding yourself does not mean a buyer can't.
Step 3: Say Exactly What the Item Is
New shops often write titles the way the maker thinks about the product: a collection name, a mood, a clever phrase. Etsy's own advice for titles is short: say clearly what the item is, add its key details, keep it under about 15 words, and don't repeat words or add sales words like “perfect”.
A test that works: if a stranger read only your title, could they say what you sell? “Sage linen tote bag with inside pocket” passes. “The Meadow Collection” does not. Paste your title into our free Etsy title checker to test it against Etsy's guidance.
Step 4: Use All 13 Tags, and Make Them Specific
Etsy matches tags with shoppers' searches. You get 13 per listing, each up to 20 characters, and Etsy recommends a diverse set rather than 13 versions of the same idea. For a new shop, specific beats broad: a single word like bag puts you up against every bag on Etsy, while linen tote bag or tote with pocket is a search you have a chance in.
Use tags for the searches your title can't fit, including the reasons people buy: Etsy itself gives “gift for her” as a good tag. The free Etsy tag checker flags tags that are too long, repeated or single words.
Step 5: Fill In the Category and Attributes
The category you pick decides which attributes (colour, material, occasion and so on) you can add, and Etsy says attributes help buyers find items in search. When an attribute doesn't have the exact option you need, Etsy's advice is to choose the closest one and put the precise word in a tag (its example: pick “Yellow” for a lemon scarf and tag it “lemon scarf”).
Step 6: See Real Search Numbers With Marketplace Insights
Etsy now has its own keyword tool. In Stats → Marketplace Insights you can type a phrase and see how many times it was searched on Etsy in the last 30 days, and how many listings compete for it. Free shops get 15 lookups a week. It is the most reliable source there is for search numbers, because it comes from Etsy itself. Use it to choose between two possible tags, or to check a product idea before you make it.
Step 7: Add Listings and Bring In Your First Visitors
Each new listing is another title and another 13 tags that can match a search. You don't need entirely new products: sizes, colours and bundles can each be their own listing aimed at a different search.
Etsy also suggests promoting your shop on social media. For a new shop this matters more than it sounds: visits from people who already like what you make are the ones most likely to favourite and buy, and that is the history a new shop is missing.
What Not to Do in Your First Month
- Don't edit every listing every day. Make a change for a reason, then leave it for two to three weeks.
- Don't renew to get noticed. Renewing costs $0.20 a time, and Etsy doesn't say it helps search.
- Don't start Etsy Ads to fix it. New shops wait 15 days anyway, and Etsy says ads work best on listings that already get interest. Our guide to Etsy Ads with no views explains why.

Audit My Shop FreeFrequently Asked Questions
How long does it take a new Etsy shop to get views?
Etsy says changes to a listing can take up to a day to show in search, so new listings are searchable almost straight away. Views build over weeks, not days: a new shop has no sales, reviews or click history yet, so it starts slowly.
How do I know if my Etsy listing is showing in search?
Open Stats in Shop Manager and look at Etsy search under How shoppers found you, plus the Etsy app line, which is where app searches are counted. Searching for your own listing is not a reliable test: Etsy says search results are personal to each shopper.
Should I run Etsy Ads in a brand new shop?
You cannot for the first 15 days: Etsy makes new shops wait before starting Etsy Ads. Etsy also says ads work best when listings already get interest from buyers, so fix the listings first and treat ads as a later step.
Does renewing listings help a new Etsy shop get views?
Renewing costs $0.20 each time and gives a listing a new listing date, but Etsy does not say it improves search placement. In a new shop, the same money is better spent on new listings, which each give you another chance to match a search.
How many listings should a new Etsy shop have?
Etsy does not set a number. Each listing is another set of 13 tags and another title that can match a search, so more listings give you more chances to be found. Variations of one product (sizes, colours, bundles) can each target a different search.
If your shop is older than a few months and views are still low, the causes are different. Our main guide to why an Etsy shop is not getting views covers them, and the free shop audit shows which of your listings to start with.
