You know your listing could perform better, but where do you start? When you're juggling product photography, customer messages, and shipping deadlines, it's hard to find time for a full SEO overhaul. That's why a checklist works. You don't need to read a 20-page guide — you need 27 specific things you can fix right now, one at a time, with your Etsy dashboard open in the next tab.

Every item below is something you can act on in under five minutes. Some will take 30 seconds. Work through the list from top to bottom, or jump straight to the section where you know your listings are weakest. Either way, by the time you're done, your listing will be significantly stronger across every factor Etsy's search algorithm cares about.

Title (Items 1–5)

Your title is the single highest-impact field in your listing. It's what Etsy's search algorithm reads first, and it's the first thing a buyer sees in search results. Get this right and everything else becomes easier.

1. Front-load your primary keyword in the first 3 words

Etsy gives extra weight to words at the beginning of your title. If you sell handmade ceramic mugs, your title should start with Ceramic Mug Handmade — not Beautiful Gift for Coffee Lovers – Ceramic Mug. Put the words buyers are actually searching for up front, and save the descriptive flourishes for later in the title.

2. Use the full 140 characters

Most sellers use only 60–80 characters. That's leaving free keyword real estate on the table. Etsy gives you 140 characters — use them. Every extra relevant keyword phrase is another chance to match a buyer's search query. A fuller title like Ceramic Mug Handmade | Coffee Lover Gift | Large 350ml Stoneware Cup | Speckled Glaze covers four distinct search phrases in one title.

3. Use pipe or bullet separators between keyword phrases

Separators like | or break your title into scannable chunks. This helps both Etsy's algorithm (which can parse distinct phrases) and human buyers (who skim search results in under two seconds). Avoid commas or dashes — they make titles read like run-on sentences.

4. Include product type + material + use case + recipient

A strong title answers four questions: What is it? What's it made from? What's it for? Who's it for? For example: Ceramic Mug Handmade | Stoneware Coffee Cup | Morning Tea Gift | Gift for Mum. Each phrase targets a different buyer search pattern.

5. Test title readability — would a buyer click this in search results?

Read your title out loud. If it sounds like keyword soup, trim it back. You need keywords for ranking, but you also need a human to choose your listing over the 50 others on the page. A title that's 100% keywords and 0% clarity will rank but won't convert. Aim for 80/20 — mostly keywords, but still readable.

Quick test: Search your primary keyword on Etsy and compare your title to the top 10 results. Does yours look as clear and clickable as theirs?

Tags (Items 6–10)

Tags are your second line of keyword targeting. They work alongside your title to tell Etsy's search algorithm what your listing is about. Think of tags as the keywords your title didn't have room for.

6. Use all 13 tag slots — never leave any blank

Every empty tag slot is a missed opportunity to match a buyer's search. Etsy gives you exactly 13 tags. Use every single one. If you're struggling to fill them, think about synonyms, related uses, recipient types, seasonal occasions, and style descriptors. For a ceramic mug, that might include pottery mug, coffee gift set, housewarming present, and kitchen decor.

7. Use multi-word phrases, not single words

A tag like mug is nearly useless — it's too broad and you'll never rank for it. Use multi-word phrases like handmade ceramic mug or large coffee cup. Etsy matches tags as complete phrases, so longer tags give you more specific (and less competitive) matches.

8. Mix primary, long-tail, niche, and trending tags

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Use 3–4 high-volume primary tags (e.g. ceramic mug), 4–5 long-tail phrases (e.g. large handmade stoneware mug), 2–3 niche tags (e.g. speckled glaze pottery), and 1–2 trending or seasonal tags (e.g. fathers day gift).

9. Don't duplicate exact title phrases as tags

Etsy already indexes your title. Repeating the exact same phrase as a tag wastes a slot. Instead, use tags for related phrases your title didn't cover. If your title says "Ceramic Mug Handmade," don't use ceramic mug handmade as a tag. Use pottery coffee cup instead — same product, different words.

10. Rotate 2–3 seasonal tags each quarter

Swap in seasonal tags before peak shopping periods. In October, add christmas gift for her. In January, swap to valentines day present. Keep 10–11 evergreen tags and rotate the rest. Set a quarterly reminder so you don't forget.

Description (Items 11–15)

Your description does double duty: it helps Etsy understand what you're selling (boosting search relevance), and it convinces buyers to click "Add to cart." Most sellers either write two sentences or copy-paste a wall of text. Both approaches lose sales.

11. Write a keyword-rich opening sentence (first 160 characters matter most)

The first 160 characters of your description appear as the preview snippet in search results and Google. Lead with your primary keyword and a clear benefit: "This handmade ceramic mug holds 350ml of your favourite brew and is finished in a unique speckled glaze that makes every piece one of a kind." Front-load value, not policies.

12. Include your primary keyword naturally in the first paragraph

Etsy's algorithm scans your description for keyword relevance. Make sure your main keyword phrase appears in the first paragraph — but write it naturally. Stuffing ceramic mug five times in three sentences will hurt readability and won't improve ranking. Once or twice in the opening paragraph is enough.

13. Write at least 300 words

Longer descriptions consistently correlate with higher search rankings on Etsy. Aim for 300–500 words. Cover the product details, materials, dimensions, care instructions, shipping information, and what makes your item special. If you're stuck, imagine a customer asking questions at a craft fair — answer all of them in your description.

14. Use short paragraphs (2–3 sentences) for mobile readability

Over 60% of Etsy traffic comes from mobile devices. A single block of text is unreadable on a phone screen. Break your description into short paragraphs with clear spacing. Use line breaks between sections. If a paragraph has more than three sentences, split it.

15. Add a clear call to action

Tell the buyer what to do next. It sounds obvious, but most listings just… end. Close with a line like "Add to cart to secure yours — each mug is one of a kind" or "Order by 15th December for guaranteed Christmas delivery." Urgency and scarcity work especially well for handmade items.

Photos (Items 16–20)

Photos are what buyers click on. Your title gets you into search results, but your photos determine whether anyone actually visits your listing. Etsy allows 10 images — treat each one as a different argument for why a buyer should purchase.

16. Upload all 10 photo slots

Listings with all 10 photos filled consistently outperform those with fewer. Even if you think five photos are enough, fill the remaining slots with detail shots, packaging photos, or images showing variations. More photos mean more information for the buyer, and more reasons to stay on your listing instead of bouncing back to search.

17. Use a clean, well-lit first photo

Your first photo is your click-through rate. It appears as the thumbnail in search results, and buyers decide in under a second whether to click. Use natural lighting, a clean background (white or neutral), and make sure the product fills at least 75% of the frame. No clutter, no busy backgrounds, no dark shadows.

18. Show scale with a product-in-use photo

Buyers can't pick up your product and hold it. Help them understand the size by including a photo of someone holding the mug, or placing it next to a common object like a book or a hand. "How big is it?" is one of the most common buyer questions — answer it visually and you'll reduce messages and returns.

19. Include a lifestyle photo showing the product in context

Show the mug on a kitchen counter with steam rising from it. Show the necklace being worn with an outfit. Lifestyle photos help buyers imagine owning your product, which is the emotional trigger that turns browsing into buying. At least one or two of your 10 photos should be lifestyle shots.

20. Add text overlays on 1–2 photos highlighting key features

Use a simple overlay on one or two images to call out dimensions, materials, or unique selling points. Something like "Holds 350ml • Dishwasher Safe • Lead-Free Glaze" on a clean background converts browsers into buyers. Keep overlays minimal and legible — use a tool like Canva to add them quickly.

Pro tip: Look at your listing on a mobile phone. If you can't read your text overlays or see the product clearly on a small screen, reshoot or resize.

Video (Item 21)

21. Upload a listing video — even 5–15 seconds helps

Listings with video get a video badge in Etsy search results, which improves click-through rate. You don't need a professional production — a simple 10-second clip showing the product from multiple angles, or a quick hands-on demo, is enough. Film in natural light, keep it steady (use a phone tripod or lean your phone against something), and let the product speak for itself. No audio or music needed.

Pricing & Shipping (Items 22–24)

Pricing and shipping aren't just business decisions — they directly affect your search ranking and conversion rate. Etsy's algorithm factors in listing quality score, which includes shipping reliability and competitive pricing.

22. Research competitor pricing

Search your primary keyword on Etsy and check the first two pages of results. Note the price range, the average, and where the bestsellers sit. You don't need to be the cheapest — but if every competitor sells a similar mug for £12–£18 and yours is £35, you need to clearly communicate why yours is worth more. If you can't justify the premium, adjust your pricing.

23. Offer free shipping if possible

Etsy's algorithm gives a ranking boost to listings with free shipping, and buyers psychologically prefer a £20 item with free shipping over a £15 item with £5 postage — even though the total is the same. If your margins allow it, build shipping into your product price and mark it as free. Etsy also has a "Free shipping guarantee" programme that can give additional visibility.

24. Set processing times accurately

Late shipments tank your listing quality score, which directly hurts your search ranking. Be honest about how long it takes you to make and ship an item. If it takes 3–5 business days, say 3–5 business days — don't say 1–2 and then consistently miss it. Etsy tracks your on-time shipping rate, and listings from shops with a strong track record get a silent ranking boost.

Watch out: If your on-time shipping rate drops below 95%, Etsy may reduce your listing visibility in search. Set realistic processing times and meet them consistently.

Category & Attributes (Items 25–27)

Categories and attributes are the fields most sellers rush through during listing creation. But they're how Etsy filters and matches your product to buyer searches — especially when buyers use the sidebar filters on desktop or the "Refine" button on mobile.

25. Choose the most specific category available

Don't stop at "Home & Living." Drill down to the most specific subcategory: Home & Living → Kitchen & Dining → Drink & Barware → Mugs. The more specific your category, the more accurately Etsy can match your listing to the right buyers. A vague category means you're competing with millions of irrelevant listings.

26. Fill in every available attribute

Colour, size, material, occasion, style — Etsy offers different attributes depending on your category. Fill in every single one that applies. These attributes power the filter sidebar that buyers use to narrow results. If a buyer filters for "blue" mugs and you haven't set a colour attribute, your listing won't appear — even if your mug is blue and your title says so.

27. Enable the "Personalisation" field if applicable

If your product can be personalised (custom names, initials, colour choices, custom text), enable the personalisation field. Personalised listings get a visible badge in search results, which increases click-through rate. Even if personalisation is optional, turning it on gives you that badge. Many buyers actively filter for personalisable items, especially during gift-giving seasons.

Where to Start

You don't need to tackle all 27 items in one sitting. If you want the biggest impact for the least effort, start with these three areas:

  1. Fix your title (items 1–5). This is the single highest-leverage change you can make. Front-load your keywords, use the full 140 characters, and make sure it reads like something a buyer would click.
  2. Fill all 13 tags (items 6–10). Empty tag slots are the most common mistake we see. Fill them all with multi-word phrases and you'll immediately expand the number of searches your listing can appear in.
  3. Upload all 10 photos (items 16–20). Photos drive clicks. More photos mean more information, more buyer confidence, and more sales.

If you want to know exactly how your listing stacks up across all of these factors, drop it into ListingLab's free listing scorer. It analyses your title, tags, description, and more — then gives you a prioritised list of what to fix first. Think of it as this checklist on autopilot.

Bookmark this page, open your Etsy dashboard, and start ticking items off. Even fixing five or six of these points can meaningfully improve your search visibility and conversion rate. Your listings are already good — let's make them findable.
