Etsy's tag rules
From Etsy's help article on using tags to get found in search:
- Up to 13 tags per listing.
- Up to 20 characters per tag, spaces included.
- Letters, numbers and spaces only, plus accented letters. An apostrophe or hyphen can go inside a word, never at the start.
- A tag can be a short phrase, such as “silver earrings”. Etsy says tags are helpful where there is no matching attribute, and for “aspirational or buyer-minded” searches.
On top of Etsy's hard limits, the checker flags three habits that waste tags: two tags that are really the same search (“gift for her” and “gifts for her”), single-word tags, and tags that only repeat a phrase already in your title.
How to fill all 13 tags
- What it is, other ways. If your title says “tote bag”, tags can say “canvas shopper”, “market bag”, “book bag”.
- What it is made of and its style. “linen tote”, “boho bag”, “minimalist tote”. Check first whether an attribute already covers it; if Etsy has a colour or material attribute, fill that in instead.
- Who it is for and when. “teacher gift”, “gift for mum”, “bridesmaid bag”, but only where they fit the item.
- Keep each tag under 20 characters. “personalized gift for her” is 25; “personalized gift” fits.
Good tags only help if the title and description back them up. Check all three together with the listing checker, or let ListingLab pick 13 tags for you from a live Etsy search for the same product: audit your shop free.
